Description of your role and duties:

Provide a pattern of conduct so as to be a positive model of adult behavior with residents.

Interact with residents to encourage their involvement in all phases of the residential treatment program.

Adhere to TST model of treatment which includes moment by moment assessment, emotional regulation skills building and TST phase based treatment throughout the milieu

Evaluate and assess client dysregulation in coordination with Residential Manager, Clinical Coordinator and client treatment team and implement phase based interventions and supports.

Enforce rules and policies in an explicit and consistent way.

Attend staff meetings, in-service training/workshops, or any special meeting required.

Provide emergency or crisis intervention techniques, such as passive physical restraint, when necessary.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
Residential setting, typically about 8 clients per house (there are 5 houses in total located throughout Smithfield & Providence). Extremely unpredictable work environment. It is necessary to have the ability to stay calm and follow program protocol in an event of an crisis. (usually physical aggression, property damage, AWOL, or suicide attempt). Physical restraint is required by all staff, but you are trained for this. Ratio is 1 staff for every 2 clients. Usually one management staff is always on site, and also administrative and clinical staff on-call at any time due to potential emergencies. Significant amount of daily documentation on each client, including moment to moment assessment. Staff communication between shift changes is straightforward and is easily understood through reading the communication log binder.
Additional Requirements: Significant amount of training required (initial: trauma training, CPR, verbal intervention and physical restraint) and there are also ongoing required trainings, but all training is paid. You are required to use your car for the transportation of clients to off-grounds activities.
Special notes on process of getting this internship:
This counselor position was easy to get because staff burnout/ turnover is extremely prevalent. I suggest applying for a relief position (20 hours a month) so as a new hire you are not overwhelmed. You can always pick up more hours. Management team is incredible at working around school schedules
