DCYF
Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF)
Address: 101 Friendship Street
Description of the overall mission of this organization: "Partner with families and communities to raise safe and healthy children and youth in a caring environment."
Ages of youth served: Sometimes infants all the way to age 21
Name of Mentor: Ron Sanda
Hours worked: M-F
Description of your role and duties: My role was in the social security and trust division. Here I was in charge of filling out disability reports for children and adults, communicating back and forth with case workers, filling out SSI applications, updating our master spreadsheets of each person's status in terms of SSI, and monitoring our trust accounts to make sure that each child and adult was receiving the correct amount of money.
Description of the culture of the place: This is a friendly and open work environment. Everyone who works here is willing to help you in any way you may need, The dress code is business attire, except for business casual days which happen every so often for certain departments. It depends on the day how many people will be in because everyone is always coming and going, usually between visits or court. However, each floor usually has a handful of people if not more that are always there.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: Be patient after applying for this internship because there is a lot going on daily. Before I found out I had this internship, I waited months to hear back. It wasn't because they weren't sure, rather two branches just merged into one building causing a lot of adjustments to be made before interns could be selected. Remember good things come to those who wait.
Other internship opportunities with this organization: Every division within DCYF has opportunities for interns. It's all about seeing what each division is about and then where you see yourself best fitting in. No matter the division you choose for your own internship experience, you will be challenged and learn so much!
