Name of Organization: (DCYF) - Juvenile Correctional Services
Address: 191 Social Street 7th Floor, Woonsocket, Rhode Island, 02895
Description of the overall mission of this organization:
In partnership with family, community, and networks of care, the organization provides interventions to reduce the need for and length of detention at the RI Training School. When youth require detention, the program ensures that those youth exit the RI Training School with the education, skills and support to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. The program ensures that youth supervised in the community by Juvenile Probation/Parole are supported in conjunction with family, community and networks of care which are based on principles of practice to reduce the likelihood of future wayward or delinquent behavior.
Ages of youth served: 13-18 years old (For Juvenile Service)
Name of Mentor: Christopher Herbet
Hours worked: Once a week, every Wednesday from 8:30AM to 4:30PM
Description of your role and duties: Community-based programming (probation and parole) serves youth placed in community-based residential settings as well as those placed at home and in foster homes. Those youth placed in-home have access to an array of community-based services and are delivered in collaboration with family and other community support partners. Those youth placed in residential/congregate care also have access to residential programming aimed toward re-integration into home and community in collaboration with family, community partners and networks of care. The goal of all of these services is to re-integrate and/or maintain youth in their homes and communities and reduce the risk of re-offending.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
It is a formal office environment, so proper dress was required and communication among colleagues was formal as well. There were 4 more Probation Officers in the building and they all had their own office.
Additional Requirements: Having your own vehicle is a must, you will be travelling from place to place every shift.
