Hours worked: Substitute 3pm-6:30pm (Tues, Wed, Thurs & Sat) 

Description of role & duties: Provide mentoring and support to young middle school girls. Facilitate Check-in, Girl Circle, and program activities. Input ideas for activities and learning opportunities that promoted social justice

Description of culture in space: There were about 6 Gems After School Counselors, 1 Site Coordinator, and up to 20 Gem Girls. The dress code for counselors were mainly sporty casual, YWCA T-shirt or jacket, and Jeans or Skirt. Communication between site coordinator and counselors were mainly through a group chat or email. It was positive and always looking for better ways to improve program for the girls. 

Additional requirements: Attend field trips on Saturdays. 

Process of getting Internship: I was told about the program from the field coordinator at Youth Development. Told me about the mission of the organization and they were looking for a women of color. The mission spoke to me, so I emailed the chief mission director with my resume and cover letter. Scheduled an interview and got the position on the spot. 

Opportunities of this program: Allows you to be with middle school girls and learn what interest them in today's time. Ability to grow interpersonal skills and approach learning with topics that are not discuss much in middle school spaces.

Additional Requirements: (travel, etc) is approximately 40 mins from rhode island college and with traffic anywhere from an hour to hour and half in morning rush hours
Special notes on process of getting this internship: Dr, Clemmons really supported me with getting into this school and dr. carney is very open to new people to come in learn in this schools community

Description of the culture of the place: In the YMCA, there are 8 managerial staff including my mentor. The dress was either uniform or business casual. I always had to wear a nametag. The environment was a very open place, the office doors were always open and everyone gets a change to know one another because people are always coming in and out of the offices.

with academic and emotional support, organizational skills, and help find internships.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
The community speaks mostly spanish because it is a very high latinx population. I do not speak
spanish and I earned some key terms in the language. (The students speak English) The dress code
is casual, which means jeans are fine. No leggings are worn there from what I saw. There is 15-16
students in each Advisory. Only 8 classrooms in each building. Very close community all staff
knows students and constantly engaging with students. The students are usually coming in and out
of the building at the met which means they can go out for lunch, they are in internships, going to
different buildings, college classes, and other reasons. The Met school follows approaches as
YDEV such as ice breakers and the idea of leading with students for their academic and personal
success.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc) The drive from Rhode Island College to the Met is very easy.
I do suggest leaving before 3:30 because the roads get busy. Their is plenty of parking at the Met as well.
There is a campus on P street as well as east bay in Newport RI.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: You will have to send an email for a intern position
to the staff recruiter, after that they will call you in for an interview. The interview most of the time
takes place in the commons which is an open space at the Met where all members work. After you
will have to sign something for them, give them a BCI, and state the dates you will be coming
and the days. You can also request a shadow day before you make your decision so you know
it is something you want.

The majority of my time at the Olneyville library was done doing research and planning programming. The Library has a very low teen attendance, and so a majority of my work was to come up with ways to bring more teens into the library. This was done through research to expand the teen collection, creating passive programming in YA collection, displays, and outside research of Teen Spaces in other libraries. In addition I lead the planning of programming for both Money Smart week, a national financial literacy week of events, and National Poetry Month.

The Olneyville library is a very small work community with only three main staff. The dress code is semi-professional and their communication style is also very professional.

Description of your role and duties: Both administrative and hands-on.  This is my paid job as a site coordinator as well as my internship.  As a site coordinator, I develop curriculum plans for every week, manage four staff at my site and facilitate activities with a group of 25 children daily.  I always make sure there is a sense of community within the staff and children and run the program to the best of my ability while following along with the values of the YMCA.
Description of the culture of the place: Split up between two sites; the school and YMCA building in Seekonk.  At the school, I have four staff and at the YMCA there are three supervisors in the office.  Most days is casual wear so a blue YMCA t-shirt along with lanyard that has my picture and name on it.  There is open communication with all staff and I was always letting them know any updates, changes, etc. The same with my director/mentor.
Additional Requirements: Travel to YMCA and school where program is held.

Description of the culture of the place: There were usually 6 people in the office. Everyone dressed up pretty professionally, just no sweat pants and hoodies. As long as you looked professional. Email and face to face or group meetings were the best and most efficient communication styles.

Description of your role and duties: During my time at Inspiring Minds I was a Site Leader Intern at Asa Messer Elementary School in Providence, providing the role of both admin and hands-on. Some of my responsibilities were as followed: Develop, promote, and maintain a wide range of volunteer opportunities within the public school and Inspiring Minds, answer volunteer/faculty emails, and phone calls, send periodic updates to volunteers, monitor the schedule of all volunteer and student participation, and collect forms including permission slips, data consent forms, event flyers, and surveys.
Description of the culture of the place: In the office there can be up to 4 people: my mentor who is the Executive Director, Director of Volunteer Services, RIC Intern, and Brown Swearer Center Work Study student. The dress is business casual in the office. The communication style is open with any questions, comments or concerns.

My role was multi-faceted. During lunches and after school, I built relationships with young people in the office by playing games and having conversations. I also helped with attendance data entry, developed promotional materials for events, and attended meetings with community partners. In the Fall, I organized an Open Mic Knight and solicited in kind donations. Starting in the spring, I developed a curriculum for a program which I then promoted and facilitated once a week.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
3-4 people in total. Myself, my mentor, and 1-2 Americorps people (1 left in the fall, the other was there all year and is also a YDEV grad). Casual, flexible environment. Jeans okay. Communication in person and via text & email.

If you choose to run a program, you may spend time outside of regular hours designing the curriculum and promotional materials. (not required)

This interview was different than the other one I attended, because Tracy was very interested in how she could support me as a mentor. You should have an idea about what you want to gain from the internship (such as experience with CitySpan, soliciting donations, organizing events, building relationships, etc).
