Description of your role and duties:  At Blessed Sacrament I was a Teacher's Assistant for the 5th grade classroom. I supported my Lead Teacher in all subjects and facilitated my own "literature circles" during the reading period. Every day we would read chapters of an assigned book then do corresponding worksheets. After, I was able to chose my own book to read with my own group and create my own follow up assignments to prove comprehension of the reading.

Small school setting where everyone knows each other and appreciate everyone's help. The teachers are always welcoming students to give them extra support in the classrooms. Even though the principal makes the end decisions there is a lot of freedom to change your role in this school.

DCYF


 
Name of Organization: (DCYF) - Juvenile Correctional Services

Description of the overall mission of this organization:
In partnership with family, community, and networks of care, the organization provides interventions to reduce the need for and length of detention at the RI Training School. When youth require detention, the program ensures that those youth exit the RI Training School with the education, skills and support to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. The program ensures that youth supervised in the community by Juvenile Probation/Parole are supported in conjunction with family, community and networks of care which are based on principles of practice to reduce the likelihood of future wayward or delinquent behavior.
Ages of youth served: 13-18 years old (For Juvenile Service)
Name of Mentor: Christopher Herbet
Hours worked: Once a week, every Wednesday from 8:30AM to 4:30PM
Description of your role and duties: Community-based programming (probation and parole) serves youth placed in community-based residential settings as well as those placed at home and in foster homes. Those youth placed in-home have access to an array of community-based services and are delivered in collaboration with family and other community support partners. Those youth placed in residential/congregate care also have access to residential programming aimed toward re-integration into home and community in collaboration with family, community partners and networks of care. The goal of all of these services is to re-integrate and/or maintain youth in their homes and communities and reduce the risk of re-offending.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
It is a formal office environment, so proper dress was required and communication among colleagues was formal as well. There were 4 more Probation Officers in the building and they all had their own office. 
Additional Requirements: Having your own vehicle is a must, you will be travelling from place to place every shift.

The process of interview and orientation takes up to 4 months. I applied right after the spring semester was over, and I was placed in the end of September.  Contact janice.smith@dcyf.ri.gov.

Name of Mentor: Nika Gorini
Hours worked: 7.5, Mondays, 10am-5:30pm (and other days if needed)
Description of your role and duties: Administrative work, I led my own my music class, and a teacher's assistant for a drum class
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
There were at least four people, including myself, in the office. They did not care about dressing professionally, but it was expected that we dress appropriately. I felt really comfortable dressing casually in the workplace, and I loved that rule. Also, to keep the communication between us in the office, we could email, text message, or call one another.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc)
I usually carpooled with my mentor to different places, but having my own car was not mandatory.

Description of the overall mission of this organization: A nonprofit organization that reaches out to at risk youth through co-educational wrestling in a positive safe environment.  We provide academic support, mentoring, physical activity and nutritional information for students that will help them succeed in school and life.

Name of Mentor: Silas Murray
Hours worked: Practices are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2-5:30. Extra practice is offered every day of the week except Sundays at 2 different locations.  Matches are usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays mostly and start at 4 (they go for about 3 hours). Tournaments are usually Saturday or Sunday all day.
Description of your role and duties: I help plan and run the workouts, in charge or stretching, help with drilling, getting kids to pay attention, coach at matches and tournaments, and drive kids home.
Description of the culture of the place: We hold practice in the middle school gym at Nathanael Greene.  We bring up mats from the basement every practice.  We all wear workout clothes and wrestling shoes which are provided by the coaches.
Additional Requirements: We take a bus to tournaments and matches.  Us coaches drive the kids who need a ride home.

Description of your role and duties: My role was in the social security and trust division. Here I was in charge of filling out disability reports for children and adults, communicating back and forth with case workers, filling out SSI applications, updating our master spreadsheets of each person's status in terms of SSI, and monitoring our trust accounts to make sure that each child and adult was receiving the correct amount of money.

Description of the culture of the place: This is a friendly and open work environment. Everyone who works here is willing to help you in any way you may need, The dress code is business attire, except for business casual days which happen every so often for certain departments. It depends on the day how many people will be in because everyone is always coming and going, usually between visits or court. However, each floor usually has a handful of people if not more that are always there.

Special notes on process of getting this internship: Be patient after applying for this internship because there is a lot going on daily. Before I found out I had this internship, I waited months to hear back. It wasn't because they weren't sure, rather two branches just merged into one building causing a lot of adjustments to be made before interns could be selected. Remember good things come to those who wait.

It's all about seeing what each division is about and then where you see yourself best fitting in. No matter the division you choose for your own internship experience, you will be challenged and learn so much!

Service Learning opportunities (at random dates and times, usually one Saturday a month from 10-1)
Description of your role and duties: My responsibilities and duties are to find one service learning opportunity for the youth inside of the program each month.  I also have to plan a theme and activities for each community event on the last Friday of every month, and put my input into the other workshops that the rest of the team is working on.  I have to work with a budget, and stay organized and consistent.  I am also in the space when the youth are there to connect with them and help with facilitating programming.
Description of the culture of the place: There are usually at least two people in the office at all times.  The office has 4 staff members that work there.  It is a very laid back atmosphere and the staff work as one unit like a family.  There is a lot of freedom for creativity and work, it is not a highly structured atmosphere. The dress code is to dress appropriately, but laid back casual dress, and when you go to events more business casual.      
Additional Requirements: Travel to buy materials for your events, and for events that the youth do.  This organization really cares about its work and mission, and is full of great genuine people.    
Special notes on process of getting this internship: Be open-minded and have the youth be the center of your focus.

Hours worked: Week days and Weekends. Anytime ranging from 7am-11pm. 
Description of your role and duties: I am a behavior specialist. I work in the schools and in the resident homes. In both locations I am working hands-on with the students with disabilities. Students I work with can have autism, physical disabilities, severe developmental disabilities, or sever behaviors. I help them with day to day living task at the resident homes. Some of the tasks can be cleaning their rooms, eating, and showering etc. At the schools, we help them with educational task like math and speech. In both locations there is paper work to fill out like their data book that records their behaviors and their task book which is what they are working on to improve in.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style): Dress code is pretty relaxed but they do not want anybody wearing jeans or sweat pants. At all times you have to be wearing closed toe shoes. Before you start working with the students you go through an orientation and it teaches and help you with how to communicate with the children in this population.
Additional Requirements: The school building is about 45 minutes from Providence. The resident homes are in different cities in Massachusetts. It would be convenient if you have a car because you would have to travel to the residents' homes too.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: I worked here before I asked to do my internship here. They are always looking for new staff to work here but I am not quite sure about the internship opportunities

Description of your role and duties: Going through documents assessing what they have submitted, sending incomplete document emails, helping with information sessions, helping plan advocacy day, going on site visits to do assessments, & calling providers.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style): nine people in the office. The dress code is dressy casual. Jeans and sweater/ proper shirt allowed when not on site visits. In the field it is business attire. The environment is very relaxed and easy going.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc): travel if you don't live in Warwick.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: Just be friendly speak about what you are truly passionate about  don't just do it because it's an internship. I fell for what they believe in. I also picked this internship because I never imagined myself in administrative role and thought I would have hated it but I took a risk and did it because in life there will always be some type of administrative side, so why not get more experience.
