Special notes on process of getting this internship: I had a great experience, the kids in this space have so many interesting stories and come from many different backgrounds. My mentor was great, she was incredibly accommodating to my needs and what I wanted to accomplish in my time at The Met. It can get a little boring from time to time but, I would highly suggest an internship here.
Other internship opportunities with this organization: Job opportunities are always an option here. Advisor positions aren't limited to people with teaching degrees. You can be an advisor/educator with a youth development degree.

The Rhode Island Department of Education- 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Office

Name of Organization:
The Rhode Island Department of Education- 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Office
Address:
255 Westminster St, Providence, RI 02903
Description of the overall mission of this organization:
RIDE provides funds to support the development of high quality after-school and summer programs through a competitive process that prioritizes high poverty areas. All 21st CCLCs must show a partnership between the target school(s) and a community- or faith-based organization.
Ages of youth served:
K-12th Grade
Name of Mentor:
Jan Mermin
Hours worked:
211 (between 2 internships)
Description of your role and duties:
  • I was responsible for assisting with all phases of the Rhode Island Department of Education - 21st CCLC Grant Request for Proposals (RFP) Process. This involved reviewing State and Federal documents, working to establish a strong reviewal process and team(s), attending subgrantee information meetings, and more.
  • I served on the Rhode Island Department of Education for Equity Committee. This involved attending weekly meetings that focused on developing a departmental definition for equity and creating a process that reviews policies that potentially have equity gaps.
  • I created a resource manual for all incoming subgrantees that took outdated processes to educate subgrantees and updated it in a way that focused on concise information and connecting to resources.
  • I also executed other tasks/assignments per request if it assisted in the development of skills that I initially wanted to target when I began working within RIDE.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
The culture of the place was very welcoming. I was brought into tasks and taking on responsibilities right away. Most importantly, every individual valued my input equally with their coworkers. I felt like a part of the office as soon as I had joined the team within RIDE.  This culture seemed counter-intuitive to the setup of the office; rows and rows of cubicles tucked away on the fifth floor of a building in downtown Providence. The dress code was never directly addressed with me, although, I saw a range from business casual to business professional while at my time within RIDE.
Additional Requirements:
Transportation is required to and from downtown Providence. Parking is validated through RIDE, although, I highly recommend taking the NEC shuttle to downtown Providence- this would require approximately ½ mile walks.
Special notes on the process of getting this internship:
I had an initial meeting with Jan Mermin to establish if the internship would be a good fit. Having this meeting helped expedite the process of going through the governor's internship program interview.
It did require an interview at the Statehouse and a final essay submission (minimum 500 words).
