Description of the overall mission of this organization:
The Certificate in Community Studies (CCS) at Rhode Island College will offer students with intellectual disability (ID) the opportunity to self-direct academic coursework and internships to enhance their skills and knowledge critical to a variety of career choices. The CCS includes internships extending student knowledge and skills across four vocational internship experiences. The CCS is designed to include students with ID who are still eligible for special education through their local school district and students who have already graduated from high school.


Ages of youth served: ages 18+
Hours of internship: The hours really depend on your schedule and when you are available.  
Description of role and duties:
My Personal role was an academic Mentor.  I was in class with the student for 3 hours.  I then would meet with the other mentors for a supervision meeting with a faculty member.  My personal Internship project was a binder.  I created a binder full of information about the college that I believed to be in one place for the students to have easy access to.  
Many students with ID may require additional supports to help them fully access their academic, social, and work experience at Rhode Island College. Supports available as part of the CCS include:
  • Educational Mentoring
  • Support to assist student with course assignments, study help, and course organization.
  • [3 hours in class support plus 3 hours academic (outside class) support].
  • Social Mentoring
  • Provide students with in-the-moment coaching in campus navigation, access to social/recreational opportunities at RIC, social etiquette, time and money management.
  • [3 hours per week (Year 1) Year 2: TBD]
  • Job Mentoring
  • Provide support in skills related to employment including on-site job coaching (campus jobs and community placements).

Hours worked: 180, 5 hours every Wednesday at United Way of Rhode Island as well as 6:30am-8:30am Monday to Friday at Tower Street Community Center
Description of your role and duties: Administrative duties at United Way of Rhode Island included reading all 14 RFP's correlating to the Hasbro Summer Learning Sites that were awarded this year and two years following for grants.  I then worked closely with my mentor who is the Senior Project Manager of Expanded Learning to update, learn and create the new United Way Afterschool and Summer Learning Map of Rhode Island.  I worked closely with the city of Providence to compile a list of sites as well as ages, who to contact website information and what services they offer.  I also worked together in completing tasks for the  Expanded Learning Objectives (ELO) Summit.  
While at Tower Street Community Center, I welcomed parents and students  in the morning as they came to the morning
Program.  Asking them if they wanted breakfast or to play a game.  Interacted them and helped everyone feel welcome and help them with any problems or situations that would accure.

Description of role and duties: (include administrative or hands-on or both): I worked with my mentor to plan and organize various fundraisers throughout the course of the year.  My duties were mainly administrative in nature.  I did a lot of behind the scenes work for each fundraiser.  The only hands-on parts of my internship were running Parent Committee meetings and attending the different fundraisers I had coordinated.

Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style): I communicated with my mentor primarily through text and email.  We had many informal meetings as well.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc) I used my car to travel to and from fundraising events.

 I am the lead preschool teacher at the center. I have been here at this center for almost three years. I take care of writing monthly lesson plans, set up monthly calendar for parents, plan special activities(Casey farm visits, holiday get togethers, graduation), clean the room, set up daily activities, help out other classrooms by checking their monthly curriculum and making sure we are meeting the standards for Bright Stars, paper work for the school food program.

Dress code is casual, but still professional. We have a board, executive director, educational coordinator(soon to be me), and seven staff members. We communicate to each other daily. The board meets with the executive director once a month and we have monthly meetings with the staff.

This was easy to choose as my internship as I am employed here. I saw the opportunity to become the educational coordinator and spoke to the director about it. She was on board with and that it was a great idea.

Description of your role and duties: I work with the afterschool program, and I am currently the After School Coordinator (a payed position). My initial tasks were being with the kids and also planning a curriculum with activities and enrichment programs. When I first started my internship it was unpaid. There was no structure in the program and they were in need of a coordinator. After about two months I mentioned I was interested in the position. I had an interview and a few weeks later I officially started. Right now I do both administrative duties and hands on. I plan and organize for each week and implement the activities.

Description of the culture of the place: Just about everyone in the organization speaks Spanish, some only speak Spanish. If you do not speak the language communication can be difficult. However everyone is very friendly and welcoming. There are many employees in the entire organization, I personally work with about 6. For dress, I choose to dress Business Casual on a regular basis, it is not a requirement.

Special notes on process of getting this internship: For Swrk 325, my community for the major project was Central Falls, and part of the final paper was to find a social organization. Progreso Latino was recommended to us, and after meeting with the Director of Social Services (Ami Awad), I thought it would be the perfect site for me. A few days after the meeting I sent her an email stating that I was looking for an internship and I believed I could be a great asset for the organization.

Description of your role and duties: I am a part- time AmeriCorp member on the education team, which means my main focus is Leaning Club at the Boys and Girls Club of South Side. Along with myself, I have three other girls in my team. Our job is to come up with math based activities, come up with a lesson plan, and implement our activities at club.  Along with that, we are also always working on other activities for the museum and helping out other clubs with events they may have. Along with being on the education team, another duty I have for the museum is play guiding. As a play guide it is my job to facilitate and look after museum exhibits, by interacting with youth and their families and making sure they youth feel as if they are in a safe environment in the museum.

Description of the culture of the place: For the AmeriCorp Team, there is a place in the back of all of the offices called the "AmeriCorner", where everyone from AmeriCorps congregates and does all of their work. It is a bit cozy but it is also very supportive. The staff at the museum are very kind and helpful.  The attire is casual for the most part, especially on play guiding days. Everyone is supportive and only wants the best for everyone else.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: This is an AmeriCorp part time position, so the minimum of hours is 300, compared to the required YDEV hours which is 180.

Description of your role and duties: (include administrative or hands-on or both) Worked on Batchbook for administration. I worked with education and then CORE. A lot of hands on, getting to know the youth. Talking & sharing stoires.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style) The culture of the place is awesome. There are usually about between 3-6 adult staff in the office at a time, and youth come and go as the day goes on. The dress code is casual, and the staff are friendly and nice and very easy to talk to.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc) Youth in Action is not far from campus, but there is no parking lot. There is street parking available right around where the building is located.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: The process was easy! After our YDEV class visited the space, I talked to Lindsay to set up an appointment/interview. I had a sit down interview with Lindsay and Pegah who is the Executive Director and then set up a schedule of availability.
