The MET School

Name of Organization: The Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center
Address: 325 Public Street, Providence, RI 02905

Description of the overall mission of this organization:To educate and empower youth through relentless commitment to student-centered learning and personal growth.”

Ages of youth served: High School (9th Grade – 90%; 10th Grade- 10%)

Name of Mentor: Grace Williams (grace.williams@metmail.org)

Hours worked:
I would work 11 hours a week at my internship site. (Monday- (3pm-5pm)) (Wednesday-(12pm-5pm) and Fridays (10am-2pm) you must be free either on Mondays and Wednesdays 3pm-5pm or Tuesdays and Thursdays 3pm-5pm for the extended day programs.

Description of your role and duties: My official role at The MET is being an Extended Day Provider for the Fit for Life Program. My job was to supervise and implement input for the students while making sure everyone was engaged in an activity. Halfway through the semester we sharpened up the program where we developed goals for each student as well as monitoring their progress. My other roles at The Met included Clerical Duties, Office Organization, Invoice/ Timesheet Tracking, Asses and Monitoring Students Attendance in their Extended Day Programs, Revising the Annual Budget Plan, and Mentoring Students in the Extended Day Program.

Description of the culture of the place: This school is a very diverse inner city school. These students apply and are accepted into this community school. The level is high school and many of the students speak their own mind as well as being very independent. The students as well as the staff are extremely welcoming as The Met School makes everyone feel like a family. On my office days I would dress casual, but on my extended day program days since I was in the fitness center I would wear fitness attire.

Additional Requirements: Transportation is a plus but also a majority of the staff and students use buses for transportation. The RIPTA bus stops one block away from the school campus. You must also have a BCI if you are working at this facility.

Special notes on process of getting this internship: This is a prestige community school and looks amazing on your resume. My advice is to apply for an internship in early October with Grace Williams(grace.williams@metmail.org) and or Elayne-Cabral Walker (ewalker@metmail.org).

Other internship opportunities with this organization: The MET School offers a variety of Afterschool Extended Day Programs. I assisted one out of 44 programs, and there are opportunities in various fields.

What three TAGS would you use to label this internship? #sports, #mentoring, #afterschool
