Ages of youth served: high school
Name of Mentor: Tracy Jacques
Hours worked: 200 total; hours varied in window of 10am-6pm.
Description of your role and duties: (include administrative or hands-on or both)
My role was multi-faceted. During lunches and after school, I built relationships with young people in the office by playing games and having conversations. I also helped with attendance data entry, developed promotional materials for events, and attended meetings with community partners. In the Fall, I organized an Open Mic Knight and solicited in kind donations. Starting in the spring, I developed a curriculum for a program which I then promoted and facilitated once a week.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style)
3-4 people in total. Myself, my mentor, and 1-2 Americorps people (1 left in the fall, the other was there all year and is also a YDEV grad). Casual, flexible environment. Jeans okay. Communication in person and via text & email.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc)
If you choose to run a program, you may spend time outside of regular hours designing the curriculum and promotional materials. (not required)
Special notes on process of getting this internship:
This interview was different than the other one I attended, because Tracy was very interested in how she could support me as a mentor. You should have an idea about what you want to gain from the internship (such as experience with CitySpan, soliciting donations, organizing events, building relationships, etc).
Other internship opportunities with this organization: n/a; mentor training at NUA but the actual internship is on site at Central
What three TAGS would you use to label this internship?
