The overall mission of the YWCA is to eliminated racism and empower women!
We serve youth from 11-14 years of age (Middle School)
Mentor: Karla Alba
Hours worked: Substitute 3pm-6:30pm (Tues, Wed, Thurs & Sat)
Description of role & duties: Provide mentoring and support to young middle school girls. Facilitate Check-in, Girl Circle, and program activities. Input ideas for activities and learning opportunities that promoted social justice.
Description of culture in space: There were about 6 Gems After School Counselors, 1 Site Coordinator, and up to 20 Gem Girls. The dress code for counselors were mainly sporty casual, YWCA T-shirt or jacket, and Jeans or Skirt. Communication between site coordinator and counselors were mainly through a group chat or email. It was positive and always looking for better ways to improve program for the girls.
Additional requirements: Attend field trips on Saturdays.
Process of getting Internship: I was told about the program from the field coordinator at Youth Development. Told me about the mission of the organization and they were looking for a women of color. The mission spoke to me, so I emailed the chief mission director with my resume and cover letter. Scheduled an interview and got the position on the spot.
Opportunities of this program: Allows you to be with middle school girls and learn what interest them in today's time. Ability to grow interpersonal skills and approach learning with topics that are not discuss much in middle school spaces.
