Ages of youth served: Kindergarten- 5th grade
Name of Mentor: Tanya
Hours worked: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 2-6pm
Description of your role and duties: Taking attendance, planning and leading various group activities, assisting in snack and lunch times, and supervising a group of 15 students everyday.
Description of the culture of the place: In this particular program, there are 4-6 YMCA Counselors on site, supervising over 50 kids. The staff must work together and communicate effectively in order to get through the planned activities for the day. The proper dress code is wearing your YMCA shirt and a pair of slacks. Overall, the culture of the organization is laid back, fun, and caring.
Additional Requirements: On occasion, you may have to travel to the Broad street office to receive training.
Special notes on process of getting this internship: Background checks and fingerprinting is mandatory. The process may take up to two weeks to complete. I also had to undergo a quick hands on interview, in which I lead an activity.
