Description of your role and duties: I am a Youth Advocate. Advocates help implement the individual service plan that is developed with each family. We provide services at times and locations when they are most needed, allowing for highly individualized and effective intervention. During assigned hours, advocates provide intensive supervision, mentoring, coaching, brokering and modeling through purposeful individual, family and, at times, group activities.
Advocates help youth and families meet their obligations to judges, probation officers, case managers and other referring entities, thus avoiding further penetration into the system. Advocacy services also include assistance with part-time employment, constructive use of leisure time, community service and connections with appropriate community resources. Advocates help young people and families expand their horizons and inspire them to set and achieve new goals.
Description of the culture of the place: There are not many people in the office and the supervisors all have different schedules so they pop in an out. But if they are all in the office, there is one Executive Director, two supervisors, and a receptionist. The dress code is very casual, comfortable, and practical- jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers suffice. Typically if there is anything you need to discuss about client, you would refer to your supervisor. However, you can talk to the Executive Director about any issues or questions as well. If lead staff are in the office, it is very easy to approach them- otherwise they are open to text and phone calls.
What three TAGS would you use to label this internship? DCYF, teenagers, mentoring, hands-on,
