Youth Transition Center

Name of Organization: Youth Transition Center through Tides Family Service
Address: 790 Broad Street, Providence RI 02907
Description of the overall mission of this organization:
To provide high-risk youth from the Juvenile Justice with services to help them grow and make connections within the community and their families.
Ages of youth served: 13-19
Name of Mentor: Sandi Nelson
Hours worked: 180 hrs worked Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 10:30am-5:00pm

Description of your role and duties:
My roles at the YTC are writing court letters, putting together Violations of Probation(VOP), going to court, having face-to-face meetings with youth, going to home based visits, participating at Rundown, and also meeting with youth at the RITS and the Placement Programs.

Description of the culture of the place:
During a normal day, there are 6 to 7 people in the office. There are three probation officers, one probation supervisor, two Outreaching and Tracking workers, and Outreach and Tracking supervisor. The dress code varies with professional dress to a more casual professional attire. When you are to go to court, women must dress in either a dress pants, skirt, or suit with a blouse. The men should wear a suit and a tie is prefered. The communication style is abbreviated with different lingos (example: VOP, RITS, etc), but after working there for a while you will catch on very quick.

Additional Requirements:
Flexibility in schedule is a must because schedules constantly change and meetings can change constantly. You will need to have your own vehicle because there is a lot of driving back and forth to the Rhode Island Training School (RITS) and the office.

Special notes on process of getting this internship:
To get this internship you will have to go through Jan Smith from the Child Welfare Institute at the Social Work building on RIC campus. It is best to meet with her at the beginning of the semester because the process is very long. When you email her, request the Application for the Child Welfare Institute internship. Complete and submit to her to have an initial interview and then she will submit your name and resume to a variety of people in the DCYF family. After a month or so you should receive an email from her to your match which will then be your responsibility to make contact with your match to set up a secondary interview.
