Description of the overall mission of this organization: “The Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUS) in College and Career Attainment at Rhode Island College offers students with intellectual disability (ID) the opportunity to self-direct academic coursework and internships to enhance their skills and knowledge critical to a variety of career choices.”

Ages of youth served: College Age (18-28 years old) 

Name of Mentor: Allyson Durkin, Deb Arenberg 

Hours worked: (number, days, times) Tuesday and Thursday (10:00 am to 12:30 pm) 

Description of your role and duties: (include administrative or hands-on or both) I was an academic tutor, employment mentor and a social mentor. Academic tutors attend classes with students and assist the student with any class work. Employment Mentors attend on-campus and community internships with the students. Social mentors support students in clubs and activities. ex.) Free period on campus. 

Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style) The culture of the sherlock center is hard working. There is no dress code but it is important to establish student-mentor relationship. It is important to remain professional. 

Additional Requirements: (travel, etc) If you are an off-campus employment mentor, you will have to travel to your students internship site. Examples of internship sites include animal hospitals, department stores. 

Special notes on process of getting this internship: I was in touch with Professor Rachel Clemons about this internship. I previously worked as a behavioral specialist at Northeast Behavioral Associates.
