Description of the overall mission of this organization: The mission of New Bedford High School is to have a physically, emotionally, and socially safe environment conducive to teaching and learning. Our students are powerful, critical readers, writers, listeners, observers, learners, and thinkers who are college and career ready in the digital age. We prepare our students to communicate and collaborate effectively within a community of diverse cultures.

Description of your role and duties: (include administrative or hands-on or both) Some of my responsibilities as a School Adjustment Counselor intern include creating and maintaining therapeutic relationships with the students of NBHS, supporting students and their families inside and outside the classroom, planning for and facilitating 2 social skills groups, meeting with students for individual and group counseling, performing mediations between students, attending and reporting at IEP meetings, and keeping a record chart of each student's academic and personal progress/decline.
Description of the culture of the place (how many people in the office, dress code, communication style) New Bedford High School is a large, culturally diverse, high school made up of nearly 2,000 students. NBHS is a very community involved school where the end goal is for every student to achieve academic and personal success. The dress code is business-casual, and in this internship specifically, depending on the session, group, or task, the ratio can range anywhere from 1:1 to 15:1.
Additional Requirements: (travel, etc)  Getting familiar with the SRTA bus routes, shelter/housing opportunities, food pantries, child care options, social-emotional skill building lessons/activities, etc. are all great resource tools that can be beneficial to students.
